Program Schedule

6:30 - 9:30 Arrival and Child's Choice of Activities
Children are free to choose from several materials and activities provided in Sunny Skies' carefully planned environment. Some equipment and activities are rotated daily to stimulate interest and provide a balanced variety of experiences. For example:

Accessible Daily
Dramatic play equipment
Large and small building blocks
Puzzles and small manipulative

Rotated
Indoor waterplay
Cooking experiences
Carpentry

9:30 - 9:45 Clean Up Time
Children are encouraged to clean up the materials they have used (to facilitate a growing sense of responsibility).

9:45 - 10:15 Morning Snack
Children join their own small group for a sit-down snack. Children sometimes enjoy preparing snacks themselves. They also practice pouring their own juice or milk from our easy-to-handle containers.

10:15 - 10:45 Homeroom Time
After snack, each group's teacher provides activities best suited to the children in her room each day. These activities vary - as do the children's needs. This is to be a relaxed time when each child can relate more closely with his/her own teacher and small group of peers.

10:45 - 11:15 Large Group Circle Time
All of the children join together and sit in a circle to share the following:

Calendar counting
Show and tell
Singing songs and finger plays
Discussion of week's theme (topic around which curriculum is based)
Story time (a story that relates to the theme and a children's favorite)

11:15 - 11:45 Outdoor Time
During outdoor time, the children may participate in organized activities (such as nature walks or outdoor rhythm band) or may choose to enjoy playground equipment, sandbox, trikes, etc. If weather prohibits outdoor activity (rain or prohibitive wind-chill factory) the children are provided with active indoor games planned to help meet their need for large muscle activity.

11:45 - 12:00 Preparation for Lunch
The children wash their hands and help set their own tables.

12:00 - 12:40 Lunch
Children eat lunch in their small groups. Pleasant conversation is encouraged to help make this a relaxed and enjoyable time. Children are encouraged to sample the variety of foods brought from home, but no child is "forced" to eat. Picnic lunches provide an occasional break in routine.

12:40 - 1:00 Story Time
The children help clean up their tables after lunch and then enjoy a story before naptime. Preschool favorites are chosen from our Sunny Skie's library.

1:00 - 3:00 Naptime
The children settle on their cots for naptime as the teachers rub their backs and help them relax.

3:00 - 3:20 Afternoon Snack
Afternoon snack is served outdoors when weather permits.

3:20 - 3:40 Afternoon Homeroom Time/Theme Projects (Small Group)
The children join their small group to enjoy another learning project. The activity may have an emphasis on creative arts, science, social studies, math, etc. and correlates with the theme for the week. Our primary concern is that the child enjoy the process of participating in these activities and develop a love of learning.

3:40 - 4:10 Afternoon Outdoor Time
The children are given the opportunity to "let off steam" and exercise their large muscles.

4:10 - 4:30 Large Group Circle Time
All of the children gather together to enjoy songs, stories and further discussion of the theme of the week. Records, flannelboard, rhythm band instruments, or other audio-visual aides may be added to provide a variety of media interesting to the children.

4:30 - 5:00 Art

5:00 - 5:30 Children's Choice
The children enjoy a variety of activities geared toward their own interests

5:30 - 6:00 Parent Arrival
